Western Conventional Medicine and Eastern Beliefs –Meet in Baltimore?
Monday, October 8th, 2007Western conventional medicine and Eastern beliefs have not always agreed on the best solution for healing the body. Many people are skeptical about acupuncture, reiki, and other therapies. Do they really work? Don’t know until you try them. Now – East meets West, in Baltimore?
The University of Maryland’s high-tech shock trauma center has opened its doors to alternative thinking in healing. As part of the hospital’s pain management options, a patient is offered acupuncture, reiki and music therapy – alongside OxyContin and morphine. More than 350 people have been treated this last year choosing alternative therapies for pain.
The shock trauma center is now doing a clinical study on the effectiveness of acupuncture on trauma patients. In the long run this could lessen the reliance on drugs. A reiki study could follow.
For skeptics out there, this could determine if these alternative treatments are just little more than a power of suggestion – or is it for real. People should look at all forms of healing. There is usually more than one way, and it’s not always with prescribed medicine.
My wife has use acupuncture for many years for chronic migraine headaches, and it works. You not only need to heal your body, but you also need to heal your mind and spirit as well.
